Group to Support Local Agriculture
The group held its first formal meeting Wednesday night in the Macomb City Hall Community Room. About two dozen people showed up.
The proposal for forming the group was developed, in part, during discussions among the owners of Barefoot Gardens and their customers. The Community Supported Agriculture operation is located near Macomb.
At least a couple ideas were formulated. One is to create a local food guide. Another is to talk to grocers about getting more locally grown foods in the town's stores.
Organizers say they hope to make it possible for people to eat better food and for more markets to open for local producers.
You can listen to an interview with three of the people involved with Wednesday night's meeting by clicking on the audio button. Another meeting could be held in a couple of weeks.
Additional information:
*The group has not yet decided on a name. It also has not decided whether to affiliate with one of the organized food movements.
*Organized food movements include the Slow Food Movement and Buy Fresh, Buy Local. Such groups offer different levels of support and could also help make it possible for the Macomb group to apply for grant money. © Copyright 2012, wium
