State & Federal Money for Lee County
(2007-04-16)
(wium) - Two Lee County communities are receiving state and federal money for some long-awaited projects.

Some federal money is finally coming through for a sewer project in rural Lee County. The USDA has released a $350,000 grant and a $350,000 loan to help pay for the construction of a sanitary sewer system in Argyle. Rural Utility Service Systems CEO, Kelly Lewiston, says the money was first awarded for the project, which her organization is overseeing, in 2004. With the money coming through, Engineer Jim Warner says it will take about 2 months to finalize design work, with construction getting underway as soon as late summer. Warner says the location of a treatment plant is still being determined. A $115,000 state grant is also in place for the project.

Meanwhile, the state will help fund upgrades to the water distribution system in Denmark, Iowa. Regional Planner Dan Eberhardt says the Denmark Water Company will receive a $300,000 grant and a $600,000 loan to pay for improvements. The upgrades in Denmark are expected to enhance drinking water quality and expand fire protection capability. Engineer Jim Warner says the design stage is still underway as some surveying work must be completed and agreements must be finalized. Construction could get underway in a matter of months with work being finished within 90 days of the start date.
