Study finds TV news viewers see more political ads than news

Michigan candidates spent a record amount of money in this year's midterm campaign. And the state's TV news watchers saw the result. A Joyce Foundation study released Tuesday found, on average, political ads made up nearly 14% of a 30-minute Michigan newscast in October about nine ads per broadcast. Michigan Campaign Finance Network director Rich Robinson says he doesn't expect to see a governor's race as expensive as the 2006 contest. Consequently, he doesn't expect the number of ads to go up sharply next election cycle. Stations devoted about 90 seconds per newscast to political coverage. But more than a minute of that was devoted to horse race stories like poll numbers and fundraising.
