June 21, 10:00AM-3:00PM

Have fun learning about lake ecosystems, fish populations, and your drinking water reservoir- organized by the La Moine River Ecosystem Partnership. The event will open at the small shelter, and will feature free narrated pontoon boat rides at 10:30, 11:30, 12:30 and 1:30.

Children under 14 must be accompanied by a responsible adult to ride the boat. Life preservers will be provided. Please bring lawn chairs if possible.

Dr. Timothy Spier, WIU Biology Sciences, will shock fish at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm at the old boat launch, which is now a circle drive at the bottom of the hill. He will be available to identify fish and discuss their life cycles and relationship to the type and health of the ecosystem. At the shelter next to the driveway there will be activities for children and information such as a watershed model demonstration, displays, and discussion of silting of the lake to help illustrate the importance of a healthy lake ecosystem and the influence of the surrounding watershed. Previous Spring Lake watershed studies and grant sponsored remedial activities will be discussed.

The La Moine River Ecosystem Partnership is sponsoring this exploration to help people understand the importance of the health of the ecosystem of Spring Lake which provides recreation, drinking water, and habitat before Spring Creek flows into the La Moine River.

The La Moine River Ecosystem Partnership was established in 2001 as an Illinois DNR Conservation 2000 Partnership and has continued to sponsor grants, river cleanups and other activities. The Partnership's area includes all of McDonough, Hancock, Brown and Schuyler counties and part of Adams and Fulton counties. Membership is free and available to anyone or organization in the counties.
