June 21, 5:00AM-8:00AM; (end time is an estimate)

Dickson Mounds Museum
Wake up early on Saturday, June 21 to welcome the first day of summer at Dickson Mounds Museum, when the sun is at its highest point and casts the longest period of daylight in a twenty-four period. Learn about how past and present people around the world recognized the significance of the position of the sun at particular times of the year.

During "Celebrate the Summer Solstice" enjoy the sunrise, a bonfire, and live music. World percussionist Rocky Maffit will help us greet the summer with a short interactive performance. Participants will be transported to the ocean via a group performance on ocean drums. Experience summer in Thailand with tuned bamboo rattles (Angklungs). Then, it will be off to China with the swelling voice of the Wind gong. Make a brief stop in West Africa with a drumming and vocal call and response before we return home to Illinois.

The event is free and all ages are welcome. Registration is not required.
