February 25, 7:30PM-9:00PM; (end time is an estimate)

David Nolan of the University of Illinois will present the next archaeology lecture at Monmouth College, titled “Roads to the Past: Highway Sponsored Archaeology in Your Own Backyard.” It is sponsored by the Monmouth College classics department, in cooperation with the Western Illinois Society of the Archaeological Institute of America.

Nolan is coordinator of the Western Illinois Survey Division for the Illinois Transportation Archaeological Research Program at the University of Illinois. His lecture will describe the basic processes used to find, document, evaluate and excavate archaeological remains located in the paths of proposed highway projects.

The discussion will highlight the results of recent state-sponsored archaeological investigations undertaken in the west central Illinois, including the U.S 34. Biggsville bypass, the NRHP District in Galesburg, the Maquon area, the Macomb bypass and the War of 1812’s Fort Johnson in Warsaw.
