Dates and Times:
January 31-April 12, 12:00-5:00PM; (by appointment only)

The AARP Tax-Aide Program, a free tax preparation service for low- and middle-income taxpayers ages 60 and up, will be offered again this year at the YMCA Senior Center. This program provides IRS trained volunteers who will assist with the preparation of basic, non-business federal and Illinois returns. Appointments are required and can be made by calling the YMCA Senior Center at 309-837-5733. Returns will be filed electronically.

Who needs to file a federal income tax return? If your gross income is more than $10,000 (filing single, under age 65), $11,500 (single, age 65+), $20,000 (married filing jointly, both under age 65), or $22,400 (married filing jointly, both over age 65), then you need to file. Gross income does not include social security benefits, unless one-half of the social security benefits plus all other income is more than $25,000 (filing single) or $32,000 (joint). You also should file if you had any income tax withheld.

You need to file an Illinois income tax return if you file a federal income tax return or if your Illinois base income is greater than your Illinois exemption allowance. Illinois base income does not include social security benefits, IRA distributions, or most pension income. The exemption allowance is $2,050 for each person plus an extra $1,000 for each person over age 65.

There are a few changes on the 2013 Federal income tax forms from last year. The standard deduction and exemption amounts have increased. The standard mileage rate for business miles is 56.5 cents. The due date for filing is April 15th.
