Dr. Jonathan Reyman, Curator of Anthropology at the Illinois State Museum Research and Collection Center, will be the guest presenter at the monthly meeting of the Illinois Valley Archaeological Society. His presentation reviews the different types of museums, why they are important, how they build social and cultural relationships, and why they are worthy of public support.

A museum, broadly defined, is a building or place where objects of significant value are kept and displayed. Museums have existed for more than 2,000 years, so surely they must matter as cultural institutions.

But why do museums matter? Part of the reason is they provide us with records of our past and those of other peoples, which further our understanding of ourselves. These records also provide information- clues- to our future; by understanding our past, we can chart our present and future behavior so as to avoid past mistakes. Furthermore, the materials held by museums can help us to answer questions about the past and present, assist and inform our research, generate intellectual conversations, build bridges to native communities and other groups, and entertain.
