Local art students have the chance to experience art education at the collegiate-level in an event filled with workshops, competitions and opportunities to network.

Culver-Stockton College is hosting a Visual Arts Day March 26, 2013, for high school students to show off their work, refine their skills and meet local artists and instructors. The all-day event will give participating students the opportunity enter their original artwork in a juried visual arts competition, as well as compete in a sidewalk chalk competition. In addition, the day will include a number of art workshops for students taught by local experts and artists.

Students each get to attend two workshops of their choice during the day. There is limited space in each workshop, though, and priority of workshop assignment will be given based upon when a student signs up.

Workshops offered include:
-Pottery Techniques, instructed by S & J Pottery
-Paper Mania, instructed by Nancy Ellison
-Watercolor Techniques, instructed by Brenda Beck Fisher, MWS
-Print Making, instructed by Matt Hemminghaus
-Graphite Techniques, instructed by Pat Kerns
-Calligraphy, instructed by Carol Nichols
-Cartooning, instructed by Jamie Green
-T-shirt Making and Marker Techniques, instructed by Kathy Dawson
-Graphic Design, instructed by Gary Meacher

Culver-Stockton’s senior art majors will be on hand in the Mabee Art gallery to discuss their work and their experiences within the Culver-Stockton art program. High school students are encouraged to bring sample pieces of their work, to display for judging during the juried art show. Judge for the art show are Karl Warma, professor of art at Quincy University, and J. Robin Stone, professor of art at Hannibal-La Grange University.

The sidewalk chalk competition consists of teams of four to six students. The theme for the sidewalk competition is “Pop Art Masterpiece with a Twist.” Students were given this theme upon registration, allowing them to prepare and plan before the actual competition. The winners of the sidewalk chalk competition and the juried art show will be announced at 1:30pm in the Alexander Campbell Auditorium, located in the Robert W. Brown Performing Arts Center.

Approximately 150 students from 11 schools have already signed up. All local art instructors have been invited to bring their classes, but individual students can sign up on their own. To sign up for the event, contact the Office of Admission at 800-537-1883.
