Dr. Laurian Bowles
The Western Illinois Museum and the WIU African American Studies Department celebrate Black History Month with an exhibit and lecture series held during the month of February. Four lectures have been organized by Dr. Erik Brooks, chair of WUI’s Department of African American Studies and will be held at the Western Illinois Museum. An exhibit of related artifacts will also be on display for the month of February.

Dr. Laurian Bowles, an assistant professor of African American Studies and Anthropology, will present the lecture, Bodily Ways of Knowing: Photography, the Senses and the African Market Women. Dr. Bowles’s current research focuses on transnational West African women migrants, women, sexuality and work relationships, as well as African immigrants to Europe and the United States.

The series is designed to continue the tradition of remembering and celebrating important events in the history of African Americans that was begun in 1926 with Negro History Week. In 1976 the federal government expanded the celebration from a week to a month. With this change, Gerald Ford urged Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” The lectures will reflect on the larger topics relevant to this rich history while exploring the impact they had on our region.
