(Interlochen Public Radio) - U.S. taxpayers spend 15 to 20 billion dollars a year on farm subsidies. A lot of that goes to the biggest growers. There's mounting international pressure to open markets. And some U.S. officials want to reduce subsidies to achieve that. Farmland preservation groups would like some of those funds shifted into conservation practices to protect air, water and wildlife.
