Al Jarreau 'Love Songs'

Al Jarreau 'Love Songs'
On 'The Tavis Smiley Show,' Grammy Award-winning jazz maven Al Jarreau talks about his latest album release.

Listen to the show:

Al Jarreau is the only artist who's won Grammy Awards in three different music genres.

In this interview on "The Tavis Smiley Show," Al Jarreau tells Tavis about how his enchantment with music led to the release of his most recent musical work, "Love Songs," and how, compared to other artists, he's slow and deliberate when it comes to putting out new work: "This album is number 19. There are people who've done, in the length of time that I've been recording music ... 30, 40 albums ... I'm just slow.

"It's a very deliberate pace, I'm talking about my heart every time I say something ... it's what I feel, and I don't take that lightly. So it takes me a while to write a song."

Jarreau says love songs take a very prominent place in his body of work: "I think it's probably close to 98 to 99 percent of songs written, where the theme is love."

"Love Songs" started out as a Valentines project for Jarreau seven years ago. The album is a collection of some of his classics, along with covers of other favorites -- like Elton John's "Your Song."

"The Tavis Smiley Show" is a weekly show offering a unique blend of news and newsmakers in expanded conversations, along with feature reports and regular commentators. "The Tavis Show" is produced by Tavis Smiley productions, and distributed nationwide by PRI.
