The program is called Millennium Education Technology and Leadership (METAL) and provides outstanding students with free laptops, home internet connections, and professional mentors. One item that will not be provided though is an internet filter. Each child's family must decide if they want to install filters.
Virgo Middle principal Megan Silvey says all facets of the program are centered on preparation.
"The idea is to get them prepared to go on to college. It's to improve their leadership skills; improve their school performance."
METAL is a cooperative effort between UNCW, Virgo Middle, and General Electric.
Program leaders say they'll help parents who want to add internet filters to their computers.
