Titan to Hold Public Workshop
(2008-09-16)
A portion of the proposed site on the Northeast Cape Fear River where Titan America is looking to build a cement plant. The exiting structures are remnants of the defunct Ideal Cement Plant.
(whqr) - Titan America will hold the first of three public information workshops Tuesday to discuss their proposed cement plant on the Northeast Cape Fear River.

Representatives from the cement industry and the scientific community will be at the workshop to discuss the proposed cement plant, and professor from Greensboro will address the plant's economic impact on the region.

Kate McClain is Titan's communication's manager, and says she's looking forward to answering questions about job opportunities associated with the plant.

"Well, I hope to get the community excited about the new plant, and I hope they'll bring us their unanswered questions. Just bring them on, and I hope we can answer them," says McClain.

Environmentalists with North Carolina Coastal Federation will also attend Titan's information workshop to discuss the environmental impacts of the proposed cement plant. A researcher hired by Titan to conduct a risk assessment of the plant's mercury emissions will also be there.

Doug Springer with Cape Fear River Watch says the public should attend and ask questions.

"I would encourage the public to go and ask the hard questions, like: How will the destruction 600 acres of pristine wetlands benefit our rivers," says Springer.

Employees from Titan's cement plants in Virginia and Florida will be available at the public workshop to answer questions about existing plants.

The workshop will be held at Cape Fear Community College's North Branch tonight from 4pm to 8 pm.
