Teachers and students in the biotechnology program at Brunswick Community College will grow enough algae to produce around 75 pounds of oil each month.
That oil will fuel tractors and utility vehicles on campus.
Michelle Sabaoun is the lead instructor of biotechnology. She says the project provides hands-on experience for a booming new field.
"This is an up-and-coming industry and we'd like to be on the forefront of providing a workforce, locally. And there's several biodiesel converter companies going in, in the area. So, hopefully we'll be able to provide trained student graduates for those companies."
Along with pricey equipment for growing mass quantities of algae and converting it to oil, the grant money will also fund six student lab positions.
