NC Paddlers Must Wear Life Jackets
(2008-09-01)
(whqr) -

In the past, life jackets were not required on boats without motors. Now, state laws require all boat riders to have a life jacket.

Chris Huebner is Boat and Safety Coordinator for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. He says boaters have a year-long grace period before the state enforces the new rule.

"Currently we're just warning people. They can only receive one warning though. And then later, we will start issuing citations for any violations."

Passengers under 13 must always wear a life jacket. Flotation devices that can be thrown are also required for boats 16 feet or longer.

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission has information about state boating guidelines.
