SC Seeks Federal Help For Drought
(2008-08-14)
WILMINGTON, NC
(whqr) -
South Carolina's governor is asking for nearly the entire state to be declared a federal disaster area.
Governor Mark Sanford sent a letter to the U.S. secretary of agriculture outlining how the ongoing drought has damaged corn, hay and pasture crops.
The governor toured parts of South Carolina hit hard by the drought and found more than a quarter of those crops were lost this year.
Sanford also asked the secretary of agriculture to waive payment limits. If approved, farmers will be able to get low-interest emergency loans.
A quarter of South Carolina's counties are suffering extreme drought.
