The New Sheriff in Town
(2009-07-01)
(whqr) - Ed McMahon says he's excited and ready to take over as New Hanover County's sheriff.

McMahon was sworn in Wednesday morning as the new sheriff, replacing Sid Causey who was one of dozens to take the county's retirement package.

McMahon says he will run the sheriff's office on a foundation of responsibility and accountability to the citizens. He says one of his goals is to increase the focus on crime prevention.

"I want to get to the kids before they become adults and while they're young, and just show them, hey we're here to help them. And it's a good thing to see law enforcement and they can trust us."

McMahon says he will fill his former position as chief deputy next week, as well as introduce his citizen's academy where he will educate residents on what the sheriff's office does.

McMahon says he will run for election when the term expires at the end of next year.
