Election Day: Municipal Seats Up for Grabs

(whqr) - Residents across the region are heading to the polls today to cast their ballot on a slew of municipal races.

In Wilmington, eleven candidates are vying for three spots on city council. Bill Saffo and Paul Knight will duke it out for mayor.

Issues surrounding Wilmington's mayor and city council races are the convention center hotel, annexation, and what to do with the late night bar scene downtown.

In Wrightsville Beach, five candidates are running for two alderman spots. David Cignotti and Stephen Whalen are fighting for the mayor's seat.

Candidates are concerned with coastal issues, such as the ongoing search to fund beach nourishment.

Pleasure Island
In the Town of Carolina Beach, the big race is for Town Council with four candidates vying for two seats.

In Kure Beach, residents will elect a new mayor with two council members as candidates: Dean Lambeth and Jim Vatrt.

Kure Beach Town Council candidates Tim Fuller, Craig Scott Galbraith and Chuck Keener are going after two seats.

Brunswick County
Three candidates are battling to be the mayor of Leland, and six candidates are seeking Leland's three open commissioner seats.

Belville and Boiling Spring Lakes residents are choosing a mayor and a pair of commissioners.

Navasa and Northwest voters will be electing mayors and two town commissioners.

And Bald Head Island residents will chose either Larry Lammert or Andy Sayre for mayor.

Pender County
There are six candidates up for three positions on the Topsail Beach Board of Commissioners.

In Surf City, three candidates are vying for two councilman seats.

The Burgaw mayor's race is between Kenneth "Pete" Cowan and Elaine Tyson.

The polls close at 7:30pm.
