James Gregory made a fortune in the mail-order seed business, and gave generously to educate African Americans and promote racial equality and Christian values in Wilmington after the Civil War. Gregory Congregational Church and the Gregory Normal School and Teacherage were named in his honor. Shari Kelley Worrell will speak about her book, "Remembering James J.H. Gregory: The Seed King, Philanthropist, Man," at a free program co-sponsored by the Bellamy Mansion Museum and Friends of the New Hanover County Public Library. Copies of the book will be sold for $37 at the program.
