| The Lumber River, designated as a natural and scenic river, was named one of North Carolina’s 10 Natural Wonders in 2010. Wildlife is abundant on the river, and the observant paddler may spot white and blue heron, wood duck, red tail hawk, owl, deer and perhaps the elusive river otter. Travel back in time as you paddle an eight-mile stretch of this magnificent river from Boardman to the Princess Ann landing at Lumber River State Park. At the turn of the 19th century this area was a bustling hub for the naval stores industry. Timber was poled down river by men stationed on a system of bridges. Their remains can still be found in the Lumber and are a reminder of how important the naval store industry was to the economy of Southeastern N.C. While the community of Boardman has long vanished, the remains of this timber company town can be found in the river itself. Kayak novices welcome on this excursion. |
