Pier Jumping in Holland
(2008-08-15)
(wgvu) - PARK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - The Park Township Board of Trustees
has voted unanimously to reject a proposed local ban on pier
jumping at Holland State Park.
The board voted Thursday against the proposal made by the marine
unit of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.
The Army Corps of Engineers oversees most of the Great Lakes'
piers.
The Corps already prohibits divers from jumping off the
navigational structures but that ban isn't enforced. Communities
such as South Haven and Pentwater have imposed local pier-jumping
bans.
Trustee Bret Docter tells The Holland Sentinel that the Corps
has posted numerous warning signs at the park, which is on Lake
Michigan.
He says piers aren't intended for public access and people use
them at their own risk.
