Border Drug Bust
(2008-08-11)
(wgvu) - PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) - A Canadian man carrying nearly 200
pounds of Ecstasy has been arrested entering the United States.
Forty-three-year-old Joseph Bennett of Scarborough, Ontario, was
arrested Friday evening at the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron.
Authorities say Bennett's truck was selected for a random search
and a canine team uncovered a stash of pills behind the dashboard.
A total of 58 bags containing over 275,000 pills of Ecstasy were
found.
A Customs and Border Protection spokesman says the haul's street
value is $6.5 million or more.
A message seeking comment was left for Andrew Wise, who
represented Bennett at a detention hearing Monday in U.S. District
Court in Detroit. A preliminary examination is scheduled for Aug.
22.
