DETROIT-POLITICAL POWER
(2008-08-07)
(wgvu) - Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick's
Democratic primary victory shows Detroit still carries political
clout.
Strong support in Detroit has countered a weak showing in the
13th Congressional District's suburban communities.
Kilpatrick received about 47 percent of the Detroit vote.
Challenger Mary Waters got 32 percent, while Martha Scott received
21 percent.
Waters was strongest in eight suburban communities with largely
white populations.
Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land says 19 percent of
Michigan's 7.2 million registered voters cast ballots.
