Obama's Muslin Outreach Director Resigns
(2008-08-06)
(wgvu) - WASHINGTON (AP) - An attorney who volunteered to help Barack
Obama improve his relationship with Muslim- and Arab-Americans has
resigned from the campaign.
Mazen Asbahi -- who quit as outreach coordinator amid questions
about his connection to a fundamentalist imam -- says he doesn't
want to distract from Obama's "message of change."
The Chicago lawyer raised in the Detroit area says in a
resignation letter that he served on the board of the Dow Jones
Islamic Index Fund for a few weeks. But he quit that board as he
became aware of allegations against another member.
The Wall Street Journal reports today the other board member was
Jamal Said. The imam at an Illinois mosque was named an unindicted
coconspirator in a rackateering trial last year. The case ended in
a mistrial.
