State Budget-Schools
(2008-07-24)
(wgvu) - MICHIGAN'S K-12 PUBLIC SCHOOLS WILL GET BETWEEN $56 AND $112 MORE PER PUPIL NEXT BUDGET YEAR UNDER A SPENDING PLAN HEADED TO THE GOVERNOR FOR FINAL APPROVAL. THE BILL PASSED THE STATE HOUSE ON WEDNESDAY BY A 68-39 VOTE AFTER CLEARING THE SENATE EARLIER. IT ALSO CALLS FOR SPENDING ABOUT 15 MILLION DOLLARS TO EXPAND A PILOT PROJECT THAT WOULD CREATE SMALLER HIGH SCHOOLS IN SOME MICHIGAN DISTRICTS. THE
BILL WAS OPPOSED BY SOME DETROIT DEMOCRATS WHO SAY IT WOULD OPEN THE DOOR TO ALLOWING MORE CHARTER SCHOOLS IN THE CITY.
