UNEMPLOYMENT-MICHIGAN
(2008-07-17)
(wgvu) - Michigan's unemployment rate held steady
in June at 8.5 percent.
But it's still at its highest point since late 1992.
The state's seasonally adjusted jobless rate a year ago was 7.1
percent.
Michigan has had the nation's highest annual average jobless
rate since 2006. The national unemployment rate last month was
unchanged at 5.5 percent.
The state's summer hiring remains sluggish. But some workers who
were on temporary layoffs because of labor disputes in the auto
industry were called back to their jobs in June.
Total employment in Michigan has declined for five straight
months as the size of the state's labor force continues to shrink.
