Absentee Voting
(2008-07-01)
(wgvu) - State senators say it's time to let all
Michigan voters cast an absentee ballot if they want.
Absentee voting is limited to those 60 and older, or anyone who
will be out of town on Election Day, is in jail, has religious
reasons for not attending the polls or needs assistance at the
polls.
Democratic senators spoke at the Capitol Tuesday to try to turn
up the heat on majority Republicans who have blocked "no-reason"
absentee legislation.
Sen. Liz Brater of Ann Arbor expects record turnout for
November's presidential election.
She says letting everyone vote absentee would make lines shorter
and eliminate barriers keeping workers from getting to the voting
booth.
Republicans cite fraud concerns while Democrats accuse the GOP
of trying to suppress turnout.
