High gas prices hit Great Lakes sportfishing

MANISTEE, Mich. (AP) - High gas prices are being felt in the
Great Lakes sportfishing industry, where tournament entries are
down and charter boat excursions are being scrapped.
The News Advocate in Manistee reports the increase in fuel
prices to above the four dollar a gallon mark has resulted in fewer
boats on the lakes, fewer lines in the water and a decrease in the
number of fish being caught.
Gary Schaefer is captain of the Trout Scout III, a charter boat
based in Manistee. He says cancellations are at an all-time high
this year, because people can't afford gas.
Schaefer also says it costs nearly 2,000 dollars to fill up his
36-foot boat. That means one out of every four trips goes just to
pay for gas.
