Stabenow Urges China to Respect Trade Laws
(2008-06-19)
(wgvu) - WASHINGTON (AP) - Senator Debbie Stabenow urged top Chinese
leaders to respect trade laws and to address currency manipulation
which she says is costing Michigan thousands of manufacturing jobs.
The Michigan senator and members of a Senate committee met today
with a Chinese delegation led by their vice premier.
Stabenow talked to the Chinese officials about concerns they are
manipulating their currency to gain unfair trade advantages and
allowing counterfeiters to undermine U.S. goods. She said China's
trade practices have led to loss of 3 million manufacturing jobs
nationally.
When the vice premier told her China was making strides on trade
policies and the U.S. should be patient, Stabenow said she was
losing patience. She said the trade practices affect thousands of
Michigan workers and people's lives were being affected by their
lack of urgency.
