Hummers Havimg Trouble
(2008-06-13)
(wgvu) - The news continues to be bad for Hummer dealers.
High gas prices, weak economy and strike by a major supplier
have helped drag down sales.
Dealers now are reeling from news that GM will conduct a review
of the brand that could include revamping the lineup to a partial
or complete sale.
A GM spokesman says the company announced the review, along with
the closure of four plants, to demonstrate how seriously it takes
the U.S. market's rapid shift away from trucks and sport utility
vehicles.
Hummer's U.S. sales reached a peak of more than 71,500 in 2006.
Autodata Corp. says sales are down 36 percent through May
compared to the same period last year.
Dealers estimate the large H-2 gets around 12 miles per gallon,
costing nearly $130 to fill its tank.
