90-Year-Old Graduate
(2008-06-09)
(wgvu) - DETROIT (AP) - A 90-year-old former Detroit Southwestern High
School student wants to be there for graduation ceremonies after
dropping out to support his family during the Great Depression.
Principal Garnet R. Green says in a memo that John Lawrence
Locher was to participate Monday evening during the school's 2008
commencement downtown.
Locher had attended the Detroit school in the late 1920s and
early 1930s, but was forced to work during the Depression.
The school sent the former General Motors Corp. employee an
honorary diploma for "life credits" this past winter to his
Florida home.
Green says Locher's eight children and his 83-year-old wife were
expected to watch him receive his diploma.
