Veterans Tribute
(2008-06-09)
(wgvu) - OPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Veterans from across the country will
converge this weekend in Topeka, Kan., to honor the men and women
killed in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Called "The Reading," organizers will read the name and home
state of each of the more than 4,500 killed since the two wars
began. Beginning at 11 a.m., the reading is expected to last 10
hours.
The effort started as an idea by a group of veterans near West
Olive, Mich. They had a similar event in 2007 honoring fallen
Michigan soldiers, airmen, sailors and Marines. They sought out
Topeka as a central location to honor those killed from all 50
states.
Organizers say the goal isn't to make statements about the war
but to honor the service of those killed and their families.
