Museum Guidelines
guidelines for collecting antiquities with the goal of discouraging
looting of archaeological treasures.
The guidelines are from the Association of Art Museum Directors,
which is meeting in Detroit this week.
The new rules say member museums normally should acquire ancient
works of art that were already outside the country where they were
discovered by 1970.
For art works found after 1970, museums should make sure they
were legally exported from their country of discovery.
Objects without the required documentation are more likely to
have been stolen or illegally dug up and smuggled out of their
country of origin.
