POWER STRUGGLE-RATES
(2008-06-02)
(wgvu) - THE MICHIGAN LEGISLATURE IS EXPECTED TO
RAISE HOME ELECTRICITY RATES SO BUSINESSES CAN PAY LESS.
THE PROPOSAL ALREADY HAS PASSED THE HOUSE AND IS BEING
CONSIDERED IN THE SENATE.
IN THE PAST, STATE REGULATORS HAVE DISCRIMINATED IN FAVOR OF
HOME POWER USERS WHILE STORES AND OFFICES PAY MORE.
LEGISLATORS ACKNOWLEDGE RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMERS WOULD EXPERIENCE
SOME STICKER SHOCK, BUT MANY NO LONGER WANT TO FORCE BUSINESS
CUSTOMERS TO SUBSIDIZE RESIDENTIAL RATES.
THEY SAY MICHIGAN'S BUSINESS RATES TRADITIONALLY RUN HIGHER THAN
SURROUNDING STATES AND DISCOURAGE COMPANIES FROM LOCATING IN
MICHIGAN.
