Federal jury deliberates 2nd day in Fieger case in Detroit
(2008-05-29)
(wgvu) - DETROIT (AP) - A federal jury in Detroit deliberated for a
second day in the campaign finance violations trial of high-profile
attorney Geoffrey Fieger without reaching a verdict.
Deliberations began Wednesday and continued Thursday. The jury
was scheduled to resume deliberations Friday morning.
The Southfield lawyer rose to prominence by successfully
defending assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian. He's accused of
illegally funneling $127,000 to fellow Democrat John Edwards' 2004
presidential campaign.
Prosecutors say Fieger and law partner Ven Johnson recruited
employees and others to make contributions for which they later
were reimbursed.
Both deny the charges. Fieger testified the reimbursements
actually were bonuses and that any contributions were voluntary.
