CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS
(2008-05-28)
(wgvu) - THE LEGISLATURE IS RUNNING OUT OF TIME TO
ENSURE MICHIGAN GETS FEDERAL AIRPORT FUNDING THAT COULD GO TO OTHER
STATES.
THE SENATE HAS AGAIN APPROVED A CAPITAL OUTLAY BUDGET WITH
SPENDING TO UPGRADE SECURITY AND TERMINALS, EXTEND RUNWAYS AND MAKE
OTHER IMPROVEMENTS AT MORE THAN 100 LOCAL AND STATE AIRPORTS.
THIS WEEKEND IS SEEN AS THE DEADLINE TO APPROVE AIRPORT SPENDING
OR THE MONEY COULD BE LOST TO OTHER STATES.
THE HOUSE LIKELY WILL SEND THE BILL TO GOVERNOR GRANHOLM OR GIVE
IT BACK TO THE SENATE WITH ADDITIONAL SPENDING ON NEW BUILDINGS AT
PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES.
DEMOCRATS SAY MORE SPENDING ON COLLEGE CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS
WOULD BOOST THE ECONOMY. REPUBLICANS SAY FINANCES ARE TIGHT AND
MICHIGAN SHOULD FOCUS FIRST ON AIRPORT PROJECTS.
