GREAT LAKES COMPACT

(wgvu) - WISCONSIN'S GOVERNOR SAYS HE'LL SIGN THE
GREAT LAKES COMPACT TODAY.
JIM DOYLE PLANS SEPARATE CEREMONIES ON THE LAKE MICHIGAN
SHORELINE IN MILWAUKEE AND GREEN BAY TO APPROVE THE TREATY.
THE COMPACT GENERALLY BANS DIVERTING WATER OUTSIDE THE LAKES'
BASIN.
ALL EIGHT GREAT LAKES GOVERNORS AND CONGRESS MUST RATIFY THE
COMPACT BEFORE IT CAN TAKE EFFECT. WISCONSIN WILL BE THE FIFTH
GREAT LAKES STATE TO SIGN OFF.
ILLINOIS, INDIANA, MINNESOTA AND NEW YORK HAVE SIGNED THE TREATY
INTO LAW.
QUEBEC AND ONTARIO HAVE APPROVED IT AS WELL -- BUT MICHIGAN,
OHIO AND PENNSYLVANIA HAVE YET TO GIVE THE FINAL OK.
