WATER WITHDRAWALS
(2008-05-22)
(wgvu) - WITHDRAWALS FROM THE STATE'S LAKES AND INLAND WATERWAYS WOULD BE REGULATED UNDER LEGISLATION UNDERGOING VOTES IN THE STATE HOUSE, THOUGH A FINAL DEAL REMAINS ELUSIVE.
THE 57-50 VOTE FOR ONE OF THE MAIN BILLS WAS MOSTLY ALONG PARTY
LINES, WITH DEMOCRATS VOTING FOR THE BILLS AND REPUBLICANS OPPOSING
THEM.
UNTIL THE NEW WATER RULES ARE APPROVED, MICHIGAN LIKELY WILL NOT
GIVE FINAL APPROVAL TO A REGIONAL COMPACT PREVENTING GREAT LAKES
WATER FROM BEING SENT TO DRY REGIONS.
ENVIRONMENTALISTS AND BUSINESS GROUPS REMAIN AT ODDS OVER ISSUES
SUCH AS THE THRESHOLDS AT WHICH APPROVAL OF STATE ENVIRONMENTAL
REGULATORS WOULD BE REQUIRED BEFORE MANUFACTURERS, FARMERS AND
OTHERS USE LARGE AMOUNTS OF WATER.
THE HOUSE COULD PASS THE REST OF ITS PACKAGE TODAY.
