HIRING MICHIGAN WORKERS
(2008-05-21)
(wgvu) - THE MICHIGAN HOUSE HAS APPROVED A PLAN
AIMED AT MAKING SURE COMPANIES THAT GET STATE CONSTRUCTION
CONTRACTS AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT INCENTIVES HIRE IN-STATE
WORKERS.
THE LEGISLATION ALSO COULD FORCE BUSINESSES THAT KNOWINGLY HIRE
ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS TO FORFEIT AND PAY BACK ANY SPECIAL TAX BREAKS
AND ABATEMENTS THEY HAVE RECEIVED.
THE BILLS PASSED MAINLY ALONG PARTY LINES, WITH DEMOCRATS IN
SUPPORT AND REPUBLICANS IN OPPOSITION.
REPUBLICANS OBJECTED THAT SOME BILLS COULD ALLOW COMPANIES WITH
UNIONIZED LABOR TO MOVE EMPLOYEES FROM OUT-OF-STATE INTO MICHIGAN
MORE EASILY THAN COULD COMPANIES WITHOUT UNIONIZED EMPLOYEES.
THE 12-BILL PACKAGE NEXT HEADS TO THE REPUBLICAN-LED SENATE.
