TULIP ELECTIN RECOUNT?
(2008-05-12)
(wgvu) - HOLLAND'S TULIP CITY AIRPORT WAS ONE OF THE BENEFACTORS OF LAST WEEK'S ELECTION, WITH APPROVAL OF A 1-MIL, 5-YEAR PROPERTY TAX HIKE.
THE ONLY SHADOW OVER THE APPROVAL IS TALK OF A RECOUNT BECAUSE OF THE FOUR VOTE APPROVAL MARGIN IN THE CITY OF ZEELAND.
OPPONENTS ARE STILL MULLING OVER WHETHER TO ASK FOR A SECOND RUN OF THE BALLOTS.
MANY OF THOSE WHO VOTED NO DID SO BECAUSE THERE'S NO PUBLIC AIR SERVICE AVAILABLE THERE---FEELING IT'S A RICH MAN'S AIRPORT.
MILLAGE CAMPAIGN COORDINATOR JIM STOREY BRISTLES AT THAT IDEA, NOTING A LOT OF DIFFERENT KINDS OF PEOPLE USE THE FACILITY EVERY DAY, MANY OF THEM REGULAR PEOPLE WORKING FOR ONE OF THE AREA'S MANUFACTURING FIRMS.
STOREY SAYS TULIP CITY AIRPORT IS ONE OF THE AREA'S MAIN LINKS WITH THE INTERNATIONAL MARKET, USED BY COMPANIES LIKE GENTEX, JOHNSON CONTROLS, NOT TO MENTION 600 WINGS OF MERCY FLIGHTS SINCE THE ORGANIZATION'S FOUNDING IN 19-91. WINGS OF MERCY PROVIDES FREE AIR TRANSPORTATION FOR PEOPLE WITH LIMITED FINANCIAL MEANS NEEDING TREATMENT AT DISTANT MEDICAL FACILITIES.
CERTIFICATION BY THE OTTAWA COUNTY BOARD OF ELECTION CANVASSERS IS EXPECTED TODAY OR TOMORROW. AFTER THAT, THERE'S A SIX BUSINESS DAY WINDOW TO ASK FOR A RECOUNT. REQUESTS MUST BE BACKED BY INDICATION OF FRAUD OR PROBLEMS WITH VOTING MACHINES.
