DNR says animal-rescue shelter didn't report missing bear
(wgvu) - MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan Department of Natural
Resources says a bear roamed a Muskegon-area neighborhood for a
week after escaping from an animal-rescue shelter that never
notified the agency about the missing animal.
DNR spokeswoman Mary Dettloff says shelter volunteers recaptured
the bear Tuesday.
It escaped from the West Michigan Society for the Protection and
Care of Animals on April 29th.
The 34-acre sanctuary houses abandoned or abused pets, injured
or orphaned wildlife and exotic animals.
Witnesses saw the bear wandering in nearby Fruitport Township
before it was recaptured.
Dettloff says misdemeanor charges could be filed against the
shelter's operators.
A phone message seeking comment was left at the shelter.
