Bill lets public see who funds politicians' legal bills
(2008-05-07)
(wgvu) - NSING, Mich. (AP) - A Michigan Senate panel has passed
legislation requiring legal defense funds set up for politicians to
report finances to the state.
The bill on Wednesday was sent to the full Senate for a future
vote.
It's aimed at letting the public see who's paying the legal
bills for elected officials accused of wrongdoing.
The legislation was introduced more than a year ago but is
especially relevant in the wake of Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's
legal issues. Some business and community leaders have been raising
money to help underwrite his legal expenses.
Kilpatrick and former Chief of Staff Christine Beatty face
perjury, misconduct and other charges stemming from a
text-messaging sex scandal and the dismissal of Detroit police
officers.
