DUNES-CHRISTMAS TREES
(2008-04-03)
(wgvu) - HUNDREDS OF CHRISTMAS TREES ARE BEING
PLANTED THIS WEEK IN THE SAND DUNES AT LUDINGTON STATE PARK.
BUT IT'S NOT BEING DONE TO MAKE THE DUNES MORE FESTIVE. IT'S TO
HELP STABILIZE THEM.
ABOUT A HALF-DOZEN INMATES FROM THE LAKE COUNTY RESIDENTIAL
RE-ENTRY PROGRAM ARE DOING THE DUNE-PRESERVATION WORK. THEY PLANT
THE EVERGREENS ABOUT A FOOT DEEP INTO THE SAND.
THE TREES ARE DEAD -- DISCARDED BY FAMILIES MORE THAN THREE
MONTHS AGO. THE INMATES HAVE FOUND A FEW CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS AND
CARDS AMONG THE TREES.
A FAMILY PHOTO WAS DISCOVERED DURING THE PLANTING THAT WAS DONE
LAST YEAR. SOMEONE AT THE PARK RECOGNIZED THE PEOPLE IN THE
PICTURE, AND IT WAS RETURNED TO THEM.
