IN HIGH REGARD FOR HIS CHARITY AND ADVOCACY WORK IN THE U.S. AND
ABROAD.
BUT A FEDERAL INDICTMENT ACCUSES THE 48-YEAR-OLD AL-HANOOTI OF
CONSPIRING WITH THE FORMER REGIME OF IRAQI STRONGMAN SADDAM
HUSSEIN.
AL-HANOOTI HAS BEEN ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH SETTING UP A 2002
JUNKET TO IRAQ FOR THREE U.S. LAWMAKERS THAT WAS SECRETLY FINANCED
BY SADDAM'S GOVERNMENT. THE LAWMAKERS APPARENTLY INCLUDED
THEN-REPRESENTATIVE DAVID BONIOR, A MOUNT CLEMENS DEMOCRAT.
AL-HANOOTI HAS PLEADED NOT GUILTY. THE LAWMAKERS AREN'T NAMED IN
THE INDICTMENT.
