Strike Affects GM Plants
(2008-03-27)
(wgvu) - DETROIT (AP) - General Motors Corp. says it will be forced to
idle its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant because of a parts
shortage from American Axle and Manufacturing Holdings Inc.
GM spokesman Dan Flores says the automaker expects to run out of
parts sometime late in tomorrow's only shift.
The plant makes the Buick Lucerne and Cadillac DTS sedans.
A United Auto Workers official says GM assembly and stamping
plants near Youngstown, Ohio, also are expected to shut down April
4th because they are running out of small brake parts.
The complex makes the Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 small
cars.
About 3,600 UAW workers at five American Axle plants in Michigan
and New York went on strike February 26th in a wage and benefit
dispute.
