Lake Superior Trout May Be Endangered
(2008-03-20)
(wgvu) - TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - The federal government is
considering whether to put the coaster brook trout on the
endangered species list.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says it will conduct a formal
study after receiving a petition from the Sierra Club and the
private Huron Mountain Club.
The agency says it will make a decision by mid-December.
Coasters are a type of brook trout that migrate from streams to
lakes instead of spending their entire lives in streams, as most
brook trout do.
They once were common in the upper Great Lakes, but now are
found in only a few places along Lake Superior.
One of them is the Salmon Trout River in Marquette County.
