AUTO DEALERS-CONSOLIDATION
(2008-03-14)
(wgvu) -
CHRYSLER SAYS IT'S JOINING GENERAL MOTORS AND
FORD IN CUTTING BACK THE NUMBER OF ITS DEALERS.
CHRYSLER'S NEW PRIVATE OWNERS SAY THEY WANT TO JETTISON HUNDREDS
OF SINGLE-BRAND DEALERS AND CREATE LARGER OPERATIONS THAT SELL ALL
THREE COMPANY BRANDS -- CHRYSLER, DODGE AND JEEP.
THE PLAN IS SIMILAR TO THOSE UNDER WAY AT FORD AND GM AND COULD
MEAN AN EXIT FROM THE BUSINESS FOR A NUMBER OF LONG-TIME
DEALERSHIPS.
CHRYSLER NOW HAS ROUGHLY 3,600 DEALER SITES NATIONWIDE, MANY
CLOSE TOGETHER AND FIGHTING FOR THE SAME CUSTOMERS.
THE COMPANY WON'T SAY HOW DEEP THE CUTS WILL BE.
