HEALTH INSURANCE-MICHIGAN
(2008-03-14)
(wgvu) - A NEW REPORT SAYS ABOUT 650 PEOPLE IN MICHIGAN
DIED IN 2006 BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE.
THE ESTIMATE COMES FROM THE ADVOCACY GROUP FAMILIES USA AND
INCLUDES PEOPLE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 25 AND 64.
THE REPORT IS BASED ON A STUDY BY THE INSTITUTE OF MEDICINE THAT
SAYS UNINSURED ADULTS ARE 25 PERCENT MORE LIKELY TO DIE PREMATURELY
THAN ADULTS WITH PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE.
ABOUT 1.1 MILLION PEOPLE IN MICHIGAN HAVE NO HEALTH INSURANCE.
SENATOR DEBBIE STABENOW SAYS THE REPORT SHOULD SERVE AS A
"WAKE-UP CALL" ON THE NEED FOR UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE.
