Building Blows Up
(wgvu) - An explosion and fire leveled a
building in northeastern Grand Rapids.
The Grand Rapids Press and WOOD-TV report seven people received
non-life-threatening injuries in Tuesday afternoon's blast.
DTE Energy Co. spokesman John Austerberry says an employee of
the utility company's MichCon subsidiary was checking on a reported
gas leak when the explosion happened. He says the employee was
among the injured.
Austerberry wasn't sure what caused the leak or explosion.
The building housed several businesses in an area of older homes
and shops in the Eastown neighborhood just east of downtown.
Emergency personnel evacuated residents of nearby buildings.
